2-STEP MICROWAVE KILN JEWELRY FIRING SCHEDULE
(Fused Glass Jewelry ONLY)

FIRING SCHEDULE FOR 900 Watt and below Microwave Ovens

SETUP:
1. Must use your microwave oven turntable
2. Cut and lay a 1/8" thick fiber paper sheet on the base of your microwave kiln (used to protect the kiln base and acts as a kiln shelf to protect the kiln floor)
3. Cut and lay a 1/32" piece of Bullseye thin-fire, Papyrus, Fuseworks shelf paper, etc. (create a smooth bottom for your glass)
4. Insert your glass design (if only one, make sure it is in the middle of the kiln) and cover with the kiln hood/top.
5. Set oven for 3 minutes @ 70%
6. Set oven for 4 minutes @ Full Power
7. With gloves on lift hood/top to view status of design
8. Continue to add one minute @ a time viewing your design until it is fully rounded and fused.

EXAMPLE:  STEPS TO ACQUIRE CORRECT FIRING SCHEDULE
3 mins @ 70%
4 mins@100% (view design)
1 min @ 100% (view design)
1 min @ 100% (view design)
additional 1min or 30 sec increments as needed

FINAL FIRING SCHEDULE:   3MINS @ 70%  & 6 MINS @ 100% - ONLY 2-STEPS

WHAT THIS SCHEDULING PROCESS DOES:
1. This process eliminates you having to babysit the microwave oven/kiln
2. Eliminates over firing (No need to look for the kiln to glow many times when the kiln glows the design is over fired).
3. Aids in the creation of a Tack Fuse schedule & others as well
4. Allows you to create a circular, oval or square rounded edge design
5. and much more.....

USERS of a 900 watt microwave oven or less, please try and let me know what you think. This process has never failed a student or customer of mine as of today.
Thank you for allowing me to share my process.

DO YOU KNOW THE SIZE OF YOUR MICROWAVE KILN???????
There are 3 size Microwave Kilns on the market for retail use today. Many of you think you have a large kiln because the seller stated that but in actuality you only have a medium size. To aid you in identifying your kilns size, please refer to the text below which corresponds with the attached picture.
To determine the actual firing size of your kiln measure the platform portion of the kiln's bottom and not the entire bottom.

TOP KILN = Small (platform/firing base measures 3") will accommodate (3) 1" square pendants

MIDDLE KILN = Medium (platform/firing base measures 4.5") will accommodate up to (7) 1" square pendants

BOTTOM KILN = Large/Grande (platform/firing base measures 6.5") will accommodate up to (15) 1" square pendants

I hope the information provided above proves beneficial.

WHAT CAUSES HOT SPOTS IN YOUR MICROWAVE KILN?

There are generally two reasons for hot spots.
1. You are not using a microwave oven rotating tray. Believe it or not microwave ovens can create their own hot spots and if your MWK is not rotating the majority of heat will transfer to a spot on your MWK hood.
Solution: Put the turntable back in or replace the microwave oven.
2. Not enough graphite coating in the hood of your MWK in that spot. In other words the coating was not evenly distributed.
Solution: Re-coat that area of your hood with the repair & recharge kit which includes graphite coating material as well as base repair material. http://www.designsbysylvanye.com/id66.html
Hope this helps..... pictures provided by:  Ann Watson of Facebook

GLASS CLAY & THE MICROWAVE KILN

Hello Everyone, they said "Better Late Than Never" so here I am.

As mentioned in several post sometime back I discussed and provided pictures of designs I created using Glass Clay.  Now I would like to give you a listing of the various glass clay products I tested and their results using the MicroKiln (a brand of microwave kiln that I use and a distributor of):
  • Kaiser Glass - formulated with CMC
  • Steider Studios - originally formulated with seaweed
  • Steider Studios - new formulated with proprietary medium
  • Claymania (GlasClay) - formulated with proprietary medium
Good News!  I have found all four of the Glass Clay products mentioned above fired successfully in the MIcroKiln.  The appearance will either be glossy or matte depending on the one used based on their respective medium and the base will either be smooth or a little bit rough.

Paula Radke best known for her handmade dichroic glass designs has created a new line of Glass Clay which is being introduced at Bead Fest - Santa Fe in March.  I hope to have an opportunity to test it next month.

I hope you found the information above beneficial.

WHAT WENT WRONG????

I received an email last month from Marti who asked if I would identify the various pictures displayed in the post entitled, "LET'S GET STARTED - MICROKILN (Microwave Kiln)" dated    11/16/09 that depicts some of the things that could go wrong when using a microwave kiln (the bad & the ugly).  I am happy to let Marti and all who are interested know that the pictures have been labeled with the following information:
  • PROBLEM
  • RESULT
  • SOLUTION
I hope the information provided proves helpful to everyone.  Thank you Marti for your inquiry.

Glass Clay & Fine Silver Metal Clay Paste

Glass Clay & Fine Silver Clay Paste Designs

Thanks to Barry Kaiser of Kaiser Glass www.kaiserglass.com I have learned to make my own glass clay with a slight twist to his original recipe.  Check out his website it is great...........

Below is another of my creations where I have used fine silver metal clay paste to embellish my unique fish design and leaves.  I have others that I will be sharing with you as time permits.

I hope you like them, they are very easy to create and would look great atop a glass or metal base design.

GLASS CLAY, FINE SILVER CLAY & THE MICROKILN

I have been experimenting with all of the glass clay products on the market today, including a binder mixture i learned to create from Barry Kaiser (www.kaiserglass.com) with a twist.

My testing of these products revealed only one that can be fired successfully in the MicroKiln without bubbling up.  This is a great product with unlimited possibilities in the glass and art world.

Below is a design with fine silver clay that I embedded in pre-dried glass clay.

I hope you like it...................... please tell me what you think about this design.

New Designs Created with the Microwave Kiln

Two New Copper Clay, Silver Clay with Silver Accent Designs

The following two designs were created with silver metal clay, Art Clay Copper and silver accent.

The raised designs were created using a mold filled with Art Clay Copper, fired and then accented with "Silver Accent" using charcoal in an Altoid container and then firing with a beehive kiln.

Round and rectangular base shapes of copper were formed, dried and then fired a MicroKiln.

After firing of copper clay base and that of the silver accented designs, a small amount of copper paste was added to the back of the raised copper design and laid on the copper clay base for drying and final firing in the MicroKiln.

I hope you like them and will try this technique yourself........................  Please let me know what you think.

MAUREEN GARBER - MicroKiln Artist of the Month

(French Translation is provided below)

My name is Maureen Garber and my introduction to art started with crayons, only problem was I wanted to decorate the spaces outside the lines.  Leap forward many years and I had sold many works done in graphite (portraits), pen and ink, watercolor and acrylics.  I have always been fascinated by glass, always, so one boring day I chose to teach myself stained glass.  It was great but not enough so I bought a small kiln and taught myself fusing, still not enough.  I then took a lampworking class from Louis Cage and BINGO, that was enough, or so I thought.  I now had all kinds of great small glass sculptures and pendants and earrings, but what to do next to enhance them to color outside those lines again?

Fortunately I was able to reconnect with “Sam” Roh (her real name is Sylvanye) whom I had met through fusing some years ago.  “Sam” was testing different metal clays and teaching the use of the MicroKiln (a brand of microwave kiln that has been tested and proven to fuse glass and sinter metal clays) and I had to go for it.  Metal clay and glass, WHOPPIE, this is what I had been looking for all along.

I will give my hand to any media that strikes my fancy on any given day but I know I will never stray long or far from the techniques learned while using the MicroKiln.

Check out Maureen's first copper clay designs created and sintered using the MicroKiln

This designs are unbelievably awesome.  Check out the beautiful patina that she captured just using a simple butane torch.  Remember this was her first ever metal clay copper workshop.

GRANDE´ MICROKILN - LARGEST MICROWAVE KILN MADE

MICROWAVE JEWELRY KILN
(French Translation can be found below - sorry for the broken French)

(The "MicroKiln" sold via this blog and our website at www.designsbysylvanye.com has been tested by glass artist and certified metal clay artist and ceramist to perform as advertised herein.  You are provided step-by-step pictorial user-friendly documentation written by an end-user as well as support via email on every MicroKiln sold.

We sell one of the only microwave kiln's (MicroKiln) that has been tested to fuse glass, enamel copper, fire ceramic bisque, porcelain, fire to sinter PMC and Art Clay Silver family of products including the new Art Clay Copper and much more by professional glass artist and certified metal clay artists.

MAY 1, Designs by Sylvanye Glass Studio (www.designsbysylvanye.com) our product, training and design homepage website, will be selling the LARGEST MicroKiln sold in the United States, measuring the enter width of an average microwave turntable.

You can fire glass, ceramic, copper and metal clays in either one of our kilns in 5 to 8 minutes.

No This Is Not A CAKE - This picture represents the 3 sizes of MicroKiln

Note:  We have elected not to sell the smaller version since it will only accommodate one average size pendant/cab.  The Medium size kiln is the most common one sold and can accommodate up to seven 1" pendants/cab.

Recommendation:  Use a microwave oven whose wattage is 700-800 watts. The higher the wattage the faster the microwave oven and MicroKiln heats up which will require you to adjust your fusing time and power levels considerably.

Note:  If you do not know the wattage of your microwave oven we can provide you with a document that will aid you in identifying it.

Firing glass too hot too fast can result in cracked glass, a glass blob and or damage to the MicroKiln floor.  This also rains true with a conventional glass kiln as well.

KAREN MILLER - MicroKiln Artist of the Month

Karen Miller works as a registered nurse to support her artistic habits.  Yes you heard me right, to support her artistic habits.  She started years ago with pop beads and gum wrappers to creating jewelry.  From there, she matured into macramé, sewing, polymer clay, wood and egg engraving and every other craft project out there.

Ten years ago, after a major surgery, her daughters bought her a necklace kit to relieve the boredom of recovery.  She loved it and then a more serious adventure began.  Her friend, Donna Zimmer, turned her onto bead shows and that was the beginning of beautiful gemstones and Swarovski crystals entering her life.  Then she met Dale Armstrong, who taught her wire wrapping, a perfect compliment to her beading.

Now, it is fused glass...............

Karen states, "Sam" Roh and the MicroKiln have my interest. With the MicroKiln, I can now create a glass design with quick results, make changes and have a finished design in less than an hour.  I really like dichroic glass ..... so sparkly.  I use all the elements with techniques I have learned to design and create my jewelry pieces today.

NEW METAL CLAY FIRING RESULTS (BRONZE & POWDERED SILVER)

Hello Everyone, Lily Pad and I are so sorry it has taken us so long to get back with you but we have had a great time designing and creating and now as you can see she is all tuckered out.

Now to reveal my results.  I have tested the following metal clays over the past two weeks using the MicroKiln with varying power levels, temps and more and below are my findings:

The New Prometheus Bronze Clay from Turkey is a fantastic clay that is easy to work with, dries very hard thus making it nice to file or reshape.  It works fantastic in a conventional glass kiln but not in the MicroKiln.  I tested designs ranging from 2 to 8 cards thick with varying power levels, temps and more and my designs only came out perfectly sintered once out of 12 firings.

Note:  This metal clay is not available in the US at this time.

Hadar Jacobson's new Bronze & Copper quickfire metal clays come in a powder form which makes it nice because you only use what you need and never have to worry about it drying out on you.  It is also a fantastic clay to work with and both clays can be intermixed.  Unfortunately, I was never able to get it to sinter in the MicroKiln and this was  after  performing all of the same test conducted above. Hadar has an excellent blog called Hadar's Blog.

Silver Smith's Metal Clay Powder is fine silver metal clay that comes in powder form and that I am happy to say fires and sinters fantastically in the MicroKiln as well as a conventional glass kiln.  It has all the same benefits of using powder like that of Hadar's metal clay powders.  Hadar and this company both have videos on YouTube on how to mix it.

Other metal clays forthcoming for testing are:

  • Salt Lake Metal Silver Powder
  • Claymania Art Clay Powder

Metal Clays that have been tested to fire and sinter perfectly in the MicroKiln are:
  • PMC Silver family of metal clay products
  • Art Clay Silver family of metal clay products
  • Art Clay Copper
  • Silver Smith's Metal Clay Powder
I welcome your comments and suggestions and results of any testing you have done.  If you would like to contact me privately you may email me at:  MKhelpdesk@comcast.net
